We don't always throw old technology away.
Sometimes we put it in a drawer.
A cable for a phone we no longer own. An adapter for a port we no longer remember. Another cable that looks almost identical to the other five.
In the UK, Material Focus estimates that 880 million unwanted electrical items are sitting unused in people's homes — around 30 per household. The BBC gave these places a fitting name: the “drawer of doom.” Cables are among the objects found there.
The drawer seems harmless.
It isn't landfill. It isn't litter. Nothing dramatic is happening.
That's what makes it interesting.
The product has stopped being useful, but it hasn't really gone anywhere.
Globally, electronic waste is already moving considerably faster than the systems built to recover it. The UN estimates that 62 million tonnes of e-waste were generated in 2022. Just 22.3% was documented as formally collected and recycled. By 2030, the total is projected to reach 82 million tonnes.
A cable is a very small part of that number.
But it reveals something about the way we design everyday technology.
Because a cable is simple only while you're using it.
Once it becomes waste, it becomes a materials problem.
Copper has to be separated from insulation. Different polymers have to be identified or managed. Industrial processes can include stripping, shredding, grinding, density separation, electrostatic separation, flotation or chemical treatment, depending on the cable and recycling system.
Researchers have ground waste cable below two millimetres just to study how efficiently copper and plastic can be separated.
This is what “away” actually looks like.
Sorting. Cutting. Grinding. Separating. Recovering what can be recovered. Managing what can't.
Recycling matters.
But perhaps we've allowed it to answer the wrong question.
The European waste hierarchy places prevention ahead of reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal. It even defines prevention to include extending the lifespan of products before they become waste.
So the first question isn't:
How do we recycle more cables?
There is an earlier one.
Why did this cable become waste?
Sometimes it failed. Sometimes the device changed. Sometimes the connector changed. Sometimes we bought another one and forgot the first existed.
Different causes. Same drawer.
Europe's move toward USB-C offers one glimpse of a different philosophy. Common charging requirements now cover a wide range of portable electronics and, since April 2026, laptops too. The objective is partly convenience - but also fewer redundant chargers and greater interoperability between devices.
Maybe permanence in technology doesn't mean owning something forever.
Maybe it means expecting more from the objects we choose to own.
More time in use. Fewer reasons to replace them. More compatibility with what comes next.
And when the end eventually arrives, a responsible route for what remains.
Recycling begins at the end of a product's life.
Good design begins much earlier.
That is the part we're interested in.
